Y’all — this was incredibly fun. I felt like
and I were just really getting going when we had to wrap up the convo…but it was so rich!To begin, I am asking all my guests this summer to not only share their successes that we read about and see online.
Why? Because I always felt and feel imtimidated by women who have accomplished so much in their lives. I know I shouldn’t compare and contrast, but I do. And I have spoken to other single mom friends who feel the same.
I promised myself that if I ever had a podcast, I would ask my guests to share their stories of failures, of how they fell down to get where they are…so we can see the humanity, the soul, the fullness of someone else and truly feel inspired.
Because when success is connected to failure, then we all get a holistic view of how no one reaches sucess overnight. In that space, I believe true sustainable motivation can come alive and stay alive.
So Lorissa shared her “failing forward” (her term) on the road it took for her to get here…and we were off to the races.
Her childhood was so completely different to mine (hear more about my own story tomorrow in our episode 12 “From Hell to Holy to Holy Hell”), it filled me with joy and wonder to hear. And…like most of us, there was a clear path of awakening into her “femaleness” within a patriarchal system. That began when she traveled abroad to volunteer building schools in rural communities for girls and women with an organization called Free the Children.
She touched briefly on her own personal experiences (listen here to her TEDEx) of sexism that continued her awakening and awarness of the System of Patriarchy, of her reaction to that and where it led her to: Reading History.
I couldn’t get over this one! I adore that she turned to History of all things to try to make sense of experiences…but of course that makes sense knowing what I know now.
Anywho, from there, when studying “BIG H History” …Lorissa began to realize that women were relegated to the footnotes and generally left out of the interpretation part of History (i.e. the story making, ep 5)
(Watch Ep 9 to understand Big "H" History from little "h" history.)
Tune in to hear the rest of th conversation!
Let me know what your biggest aha takeway was!
